The Roots of UDL
Universal design was first defined as the design of products, environments and communication to be usable by all people to the greatest extent possible.  In the early stages, it was also called “design-for-all” or “lifespan design” (Fletcher, 2002; Mace, Hardie & Plaice, 1991; Osborne, 2002; Welch, 2002).  It was not the same as accessibility.
