Differences in the atomical features of fonts you have just seen are what make each font appear differently and have a different feel. These differences are also what cause fonts to set differently, thus a six column newspaper page should use a different font than a full page paper or a brochure with three columns of text.
Notice in the animation below how differently the two serif fonts set. One line of text is longer than the other, even though both have the exact same words. And the two have a very different feel, creating a specific visual ambiance for a publication or page graced by that font. For what types of publications might you use the top font? What about the bottom font?
